How to Measure Yourself for the Perfect Shirt Fit — A Step-by-Step Guide
A shirt that truly fits isn't just about size — it's about how the fabric falls across your shoulders, how the chest breathes, how the sleeve ends exactly at the right point on your wrist. Getting there starts with one thing: accurate measurements.
This guide walks you through every measurement you need to place a custom order at Aces Studio. All you need is a fabric measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler), a mirror, and ideally someone to help you for the tricky ones.
Before You Begin
A few things to keep in mind before you start measuring:
- Wear a well-fitted t-shirt or undershirt — not a thick jacket or a loose tee.
- Stand naturally. Don't suck in your stomach or puff your chest. Relax.
- Always measure twice, note once.
- If you're between two numbers, size up — you can always tailor down.
The 7 Key Measurements
Chest
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Keep it snug but not tight — you should be able to slip two fingers underneath. Breathe normally.
Add 1–2 inches for a comfortable fit, or keep it exact for a slim fit.
Stomach
Measure around your midsection at the navel. Keep the tape parallel to the ground. Don't pull it tight — just enough to lie flat against you.
Seat (Hips)
Measure around the widest part of your hips and seat, typically 7–9 inches below your natural waist. This ensures the shirt doesn't pull or bunch around the lower torso.
Shoulder Width
This is the most critical measurement for a well-fitted shirt. Measure from the tip of one shoulder (where the shoulder naturally ends and the arm begins) straight across to the other tip. Have someone help you with this one for accuracy.
Sleeve Length
Bend your arm slightly at the elbow. Measure from the centre back of your neck, over the shoulder and down to your wrist bone. This is your full sleeve length.
Add 1 inch beyond the wrist bone — this accounts for the cuff extending to the right position when your arm is extended.
Neck
Measure around the base of your neck where the collar naturally sits. Keep one finger between the tape and your neck.
Add 1 inch for breathing room — a collar that fits properly allows easy movement and doesn't choke at the top button.
Shirt Length
Stand upright and measure from the top of your shoulder (at the collar point) straight down to where you'd like the shirt to end — typically mid-fly or just below the hip bone for a tucked style, or slightly shorter for untucked wearing.
Quick Reference Table
| Measurement | Where to Measure | Tip |
|---|---|---|

| Shoulder | Tip to tip across back | Most critical — get help |
| Sleeve Length | Neck centre → wrist bone | +1 inch beyond wrist |
| Neck | Base of neck | +1 inch for breathing room |
| Shirt Length | Shoulder top → hem | Mid-fly for tucked style |
What Happens After You Submit
Once you place your order at Aces Studio with your measurements, our team reviews every detail before cutting begins. Each shirt is cut and sewn individually — not pulled from stock. If anything looks off with your measurements, we'll reach out before we start.
And remember — your first alteration is on us. If a seam needs adjusting or a sleeve needs taking in, we'll make it right.
