Giza cotton is a variety of extra-long staple (ELS) cotton grown in the Nile Delta region of Egypt. Standard cotton has relatively short fibres — called staples. When woven, these short fibres create a surface with small protruding ends, which is what causes pilling, roughness, and the fading you see after a few dozen washes.

Not exactly. "Egyptian cotton" is a broad term that includes any cotton grown in Egypt — and Egypt grows several varieties, not all of which are extra-long staple. Giza cotton specifically refers to the ELS varieties grown in the Nile Delta. True Giza cotton is rarer and commands a higher price because of the smaller harvest yield and stricter quality standards.
